Chateaux Musar

The legacy of Serge Hochar

We’ve just tasted the 2013 Château Musar. And it’s a brilliant wine from this legendary Lebanese estate.

Château Musar’s red is a unique wine.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, it’s a wine that never ceases to amaze with its ripe, opulent fruit, and stunning vibrancy. It can also be remarkably long-lived: examples we’ve tried of over 30 years old have been mindblowing.

Situated in Lebanon’s stunning Bekaa Valley, the estate was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, at the tender age of 20.

He’d been inspired by the 6,000 year heritage of winemaking in Lebanon, and his wines quickly gained a reputation among French army officers stationed in the region. But it was when he passed the estate onto his French-trained son, Serge (who was also just 20 years old), that the estate’s renown began to grow.

Serge was named the first Decanter Man of the Year in 1984, thanks to his commitment to producing wine during Lebanon’s bloody civil war, even while the shells rained down in the vineyards.

Sadly Serge passed away in 2014, so the 2013 was one of the final vintages in which he was involved.

Hedonistic and opulent, the 2013 is a real beauty. It’s got all the intensity of fruit, silky tannins, and vibrant acidity you’d want to enjoy it right now. But you do so in the knowledge that this will last for decades.

It’s truly one of the fine wine world’s gems. At £27 a bottle, including duty and VAT, it’s a steal.

On the wishes of the Hochar family, this wine will only be available duty paid. The wine will be available for delivery from late September.

2013 Château Musar Rouge, Serge Hochar, Bekaa Valley

Château Musar is unique: something you realise from the moment you bring the glass close to your nose. Notes of victoria plum and figs, and so much exotic spice, it’s a hedonistic, opulent bouquet. The palate is structured yet fine, with grippy, grainy tannins that coat the mouth, and a fine thread of vibrant acidity. It’s a long, focussed, delicious wine, from a legendary producer.
